New fourth-grade concert to fill Orpheum

Posted: Monday, December 24, 2007
SIOUX CITY -- The Sioux City Symphony's newly added concert for fourth-grade students will fill the Orpheum Theater.

"We are very pleased that educators in Siouxland have responded so enthusiastically," stated Douglas Gerhart, Symphony executive director. "To host more than 40 elementary schools in one concert is gratifying and overwhelming."

On Jan. 17, more than 2,000 fourth-graders will attend a Sioux City Symphony Concert designed just for them. The program will feature the first-prize winner in Morningside College's pre-college piano competition, Prokofiev's musical fairy tale -- Peter and the Wolf, The Iowa Corn Song and a special chance for 12 lucky beginning string players to join the Symphony on stage in a salute to all beginning music students.

Each school classroom received a study guide in advance to prepare students for the concert. The study guide was designed by Jungho Kim, director of education and associate conductor of the Sioux City Symphony.

"Anytime you add a new program or service, even when carefully considered, you wonder how the public will respond to it," Gerhart said. "In short, we are heartened by Siouxland's response to this added educational offering. Clearly we have identified a need and filled a gap."

The Sioux City Symphony supports three youth orchestras and performs more than 40 free concerts each year in schools and at the Orpheum Theater. The Sioux City Symphony offers a student discount program for all other concerts underwritten by St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.

For more information on school programs and how to support them, contact Jungho Kim or David Krogh, director of development at 277-2111.
