National science grant to fund scholarships

The National Science Foundation has awarded Western Iowa Tech Community College a $458,864 grant to support scholarships for excellence in science, mathematics and technologies (S-STEM).
With these funds, commencing fall 2008, WITCC will be able to provide 17 scholarships in the first year of the program, 33 scholarships in both the second and third years of the program, and 17 scholarships in the fourth and final year. Each scholarship is valued at $4,000 per year.
The scholarships will be awarded to full-time students enrolled at WITCC in the following associate degree programs: networking, computer programmer, cyber crime investigations, graphic design, Web design, mechanical engineering technology, electronic systems technology, industrial instrumentation and automation, pre-engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, biotechnology and mathematics.
Western Iowa Tech’s principal project investigator is Dr. Kamali Muthukrishnan, division chair of sciences and computer technologies. The co-project investigators are Dr. Greg Romig and Thomas Helzer.
WITCC will select the recipients. Eligibility criteria include a grade point average of 2.8 and financial need.
