'Treasure,' 'Legend' 'Chipmunks' cap record box-office year

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Bustling holidays ended Hollywood's year, with "National Treasure," "I Am Legend" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" helping to lift the movie business to record revenue after a sleepy fall.
"National Treasure: Book of Secrets" led the box office over the five-day New Year's period with $54.5 million, followed by "Alvin and the Chipmunks" with $41.3 million and "I Am Legend" with $39.1 million.
Hollywood finished the year with a domestic haul of $9.68 billion, beating its previous high of $9.45 billion in 2004, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
Factoring in higher prices, though, admissions were virtually flat in 2007 compared to the previous year, with 1.42 billion tickets sold, according to Media By Numbers. That fell well short of modern Hollywood's best year of 1.6 billion tickets sold in 2002.
The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Tuesday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Wednesday by Media By Numbers LLC:
