CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Seventh place, obviously, is better than no place.
That's Morningside's feeling after Coach Tim Jager's Mustangs defeated 13th-ranked Southern Oregon 25-13 Sunday in the seventh-place match in the NAIA division of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals wrestling tournament in the UNI-Dome.
The Mustangs wrestled five times in the weekend competition, winning three and losing two.
They went into the consolation round after losing to top-seeded and top-ranked defending national champion Lindenwood Saturday. The St. Charles, Mo., collegians won 41-4.
But, 12th-ranked Morningside came back to beat 18th-ranked Notre Dame College of Ohio (31-15) and fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle (26-16) before falling to ninth-ranked Missouri Valley (22-16).
In one of the biggest Morningside upsets, senior 174-pounder Eric Hume defeated last year's NAIA 157-pound national champ Hayden "Hurricane'' Harrison of Embry-Riddle, 10-3. Harrison, ranked No. 1 at 165 pounds, moved up a weight for the dual.
Morningside's Jake Stevenson, the reigning 184-pound national champ was pinned by Calvin DeVault of Embry-Riddle in 1:45. DeVault, ranked second at 174, moved up a weight to face Stevenson.
Morningside, 9-5 in duals, wrestles Saturday in the Northwestern Invitational.
