Small schools eager for Heelan challenge

By Steven Allspach Journal sports writer | Posted: Saturday, January 19, 2008
Look for the two smallest schools to accomplish some big things in the 26th Bishop Heelan Duals today at the Long Lines Family Rec Center.

That's not to overlook a titan in the long-running event, Council Bluffs Lewis Central.

Last year, Class 1A Logan-Magnolia defeated Columbus, Neb., in the title match, 36-30, after losing in the championship dual to perennial Class 3A power Lewis Central in 2006.

Columbus, ranked sixth in Nebraska Class A, reached the title dual last year for the first time since losing to West Des Moines Dowling in the initial tournament in 1983.

Columbus is coached by Sioux City East graduate Rick Benson.

Dowling enjoys an enviable history in the competition, winning all 55 of its duals in claiming the first 12 titles, then stretching the streak to 58 before losing to Lewis Central in the 1995 tourney.

But, the West Des Moines school has withdrawn from this year's meet, though, and a hustling Heelan athletic director, Jason Pratt, was able to bring in a strong Class A Sibley-Ocheyedan team.

The field also includes host Heelan, Sioux City East, Le Mars, Lewis Central and Columbus.

"I got the telephone call from Heelan just before practice Tuesday and there was never a doubt we'd compete,'' said Doyle Naig, the Sibley-Ocheyedan coach who has guided the Generals to a 17-2 dual meet mark this season.

His team lost 36-25 Thursday to second-ranked 1A power Central Lyon and the other loss is to perennial Minnesota small school power Adrian. S-O has won four tournament titles this season, finishing ahead of Central Lyon in one of those.

Unbeaten and fourth-ranked 160-pounder Brian Block (29-0) will lead the Sibley-Ocheyedan invasion, but the Generals will be open at the first three weights and 125-pound freshman standout Steven Brockshus will arrive late because he's participating in a speech contest.

"You hate to be open, but we didn't have a scheduled tournament and I'd planned to give the guys the weekend off so we're a little shorthanded because of some other activities,'' said Naig. "We'll compete hard, we always do, but there will be an emphasis on the individual side of things and we're excited to be included.''

Logan-Magnolia brings a 16-1 record and the No. 10 state ranking in 1A into the meet.

Coach Kent Kersten's team has lost only to nationally-ranked prep power Omaha Skutt. Skutt beat the Panthers 72-6 Tuesday night.

"We've got a good solid team and we're young, but Skutt is phenomenal,'' said Kersten, in his 26th season guiding the program. Marshall Barney, ranked second at 160 in Iowa 1A, is 25-1, while Ben Sojka is 24-2 at 140 and freshman Nolan Oviatt 23-2 at 119. "We look forward to the Heelan meet. The Long Lines has a great atmosphere and our kids get excited and pumped up in that environment.''

Skutt, which has won 10 straight Nebraska Class B state championships, has also beaten Lewis Central (49-20) and eight of the Skyhawks' state-ranked matmen are No. 1.

Kersten is one of the state's winningest active coaches with 380 dual victories.

Also unbeaten in the meet is East's second-ranked Class 3A 103-pounder, Kory Kistner, who is 27-0 with 13 pins.

Lewis Central has faced a taxing schedule and another of its losses is 37-36 to Iowa City High.

Coach Trevor Carritt's Titans are ranked third behind Waverly-Shell Rock and Iowa City West in Class 3A.

Third-ranked Joey Jerkovich (112), George Ivanov (119) and fourth-ranked Derek Knightser (189) lead the Titans.

Meanwhile, Lincoln East is ranked ninth in Nebraska Class A and takes its lead from Drew Etherton, ranked second at 135.
