SIOUX CITY -- In a move to broaden its product offerings, sporting goods retailer Scheels announced plans Tuesday to add nearly 25 percent more space to its store at Southern Hills Mall.

Work is set to begin March 1 on a 14,500-square-foot addition to the 60,000-square-foot superstore, which opened in 2003.

"We couldn't be more excited to have Scheels expand their store,'' said Southern Hills spokeswoman Kris Walter. "This is a real testament to how successful they have been during their time at Southern Hills.''

The expansion, scheduled for completion July 1, will be accomplished without increasing the overall size of the enclosed mall. Scheels reached an agreement with the mall to expand into two adjacent storefronts, most recently occupied by Dollar Etc. and Glow Golf, Walter said. Both were temporary stores, and will not relocate to other spots in the mall, she said.

Modeled after its stores in Des Moines, Omaha and Fargo, N.D., the expanded Southern Hills Scheels will feature boutiques ranging from technical running gear and the latest fashion sportswear, to hunting and fishing shops, according to a company news release release. The Southern Hills store will feature expanded product lines and new concepts for men and women in footwear and apparel, including separate shopping areas.

The store will remain open during construction. All work will be performed by local contractors, according to the company.

In 2003, Scheels moved its store from Marketplace Shopping Centre to its existing store, which was built in a portion of the parking lot of the Sears wing of Southern Hills.

Scheels, headquartered in Fargo, operates 22 stores in seven Midwest states -- North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Montana and Nebraska. In Sioux City, the company employs more than 100.

The employee-owned, privately-held business was founded in 1902 by {M3Frederick A. Scheel, a German immigrant who used the $300 he earned from that first harvest of potatoes as the down payment on the first Scheels, a small hardware and general merchandise store in Sabin, Minn.

Scheels started adding a small selection of sporting goods to its stores in 1954. As customer interest grew, more and more sports lines were added with athletic shoes and clothing being introduced in the Scheels' product mix in 1972.

Steve D. Scheel, a great-grandson of the founder, serves as Scheels' CEO.

" I get sick of people who KNOW NOTHING about it complaining about the MLK transportation center. Honey, I work downtown and park in it every day and IT IS FULL BY 8:30!!! You are crazy to keep complaining about it. There are already 3 tenenants in the spaces avaialable for rent, and I believe that leaves TWO empty. Quit your bellyaching and leave your house once in awhile and LOOK AROUND. Geez, people who gripe about things when they know nothing in this city drive me insane. "

" Nobody said it wasnt profitable. They just dont seem to care for it that much. And I agree with them. The Scheels store in Sioux City is horrible! Not only is it small, but it's really poorly designed. There's just no room in there. After the expansion, it'll just be a slightly larger crappy store. The Scheels in Omaha is huge. It has two levels, extra wide aisles, large departments, a wide open center, a fudge and coffee shop, and even a Ferris Wheel. "

" Do you think their management team are idiots ?? I bet they know what they are doing and you three don't !! They wouldn't expand if this store wasn't very profitable "

" Good...now pick a good company to do this expansion...I know we all want something done the cheapest, but cheapest isn't always the best, look at the MLK Transit Center....what a disgrace! "
