DES MOINES - The roller coaster ride at Adventureland, a couple miles east of Wells Fargo Arena ,wouldn't rival the ups and downs Siouxland wrestlers experienced Friday in the Class 3A portion of the 2008 Iowa State Wrestling Tournament.

Sioux City matmen, especially, started the morning with an incredible boost of energy when 103-pounders Kory Kistner of East and Chad Ryan racked up impressive quarterfinal triumphs at 103 pounds.

But, things went uphill or downhill, depending on your description, when North's Nolan Grieves (140), Beau Gill (145) and last year's 145-pound state runner-up, Blaze Gill (152), lost quarterfinal matches.

Blaze Gill lost 8-76 to Tommy Van Renterghem of Oskaloosa in the quarters and was then sidelined by Meredith Meador of Indianola, 6-3, preventing him from earning a place medal.

Also, Grieves, East's Rulin Pederson (119) and West's Antonio Garrett (140) were sidelined with consolation losses before Beau Gill stayed in the medal chase with a consolation victory. He then dropped a second consy, but can finish fifth.

And, the euphoria of a potential first-ever clash of Sioux Cityans in a championship match devastatingly evaporated in the evening semifinals.

In what amounted to a cruel twist of fate for Kistner, history wasn't in the making.

The top-ranked and unbeaten Black Raider junior was slapped for two stalling points in the third period and was upset 10-9 when he was taken down by second-ranked North Scott freshman Adam Perrin with seven seconds left in the match.

"I didn't realize I had a second stalling call and I thought the match was going into overtime," said Kistner, who lost for the first time after winning a school-record 42 straight matches this season. "I take the blame, I should have been taking more shots in the last period."

The junior responded by pinning Kirk Sallis of Waterloo East in a wrestleback in 4:25 and will wrestle for third today.

As Kistner was losing his semi, Ryan upheld his part of the finals bargain when he stunned third-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock freshman Jordan Rinken in overtime, 6-4.

The eighth-ranked Ryan (39-4) will take on the 31-0 Perrin for the gold medal.

Three of Ryan's four losses are to Kistner (10-4, 8-4, 7-4).

"I'm only a freshman, but I've had tons of youth matches, so I knew how the overtime stystem worked," said the tall Ryan, the school's first freshman finalist. "I came here thinking I could be a state champ. Some might not believe that, but I do.

"Wrestling Kory has helped make me better and I got a little closer each team we met."

Ryan reversed Rinken in the 30-second extra period after a scoreless one-minute session.

Kistner and Ryan, wrestling on adjoining mats, started the day in lightning fashion for Siouxland grapplers.

After Kistner required just 3:55 to beat Bryce Lynn of Dubuque Senior by technical fahll, 17-3 Ryan gave up some early points to Ethan Cooper and then pinned the Keokuk sophomore in 3:45.

Cooper, ranked seventh, had been ranked No. 1 at 103 early in the season before Kistner took over the top spot several weeks ago.

Waverly-Shell Rock, which had advanced 12 of its record 13 qualifers to the Friday quarterfinals, went 6-6 in those matches and finished the day with a tournament record 197 points.

The previous record of 188 points was set by Council Bluffs Lewis Central's 2001 Class 3A state champs.

W-SR, coached by Buena Vista graduate Rick Caldwell, are ranked fourth nationally and had 73 points going into the evening semifinals. The Go-Hawks won 18 straight consolation matches before losing one Friday and 11 of the school's qualifiers will finish fourth or better.

Four W-SR matmen will wrestle for titles today, seven for third and one for fifth.

Three Lewis Central matmen reached the finals - Joey Jerkovich (112), Bret Baumbach (135) and Justin Rau (171). The Titans won the team title in the North district last week.

Spencer's semifinalist, Tyler Kacmarynski, lost 10-1 to Bryon Tate at 215 pounds, but bounced back with a 6-4 win over Waverly's Cody Krumwiede, advancing into today's third-place match.
