VERMILLION, S.D. -- Sue Marie Johnson, 54, of Vermillion died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at Sanford Vermillion Hospital in Vermillion.
Services will be 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Vermillion, with the Rev. Mercy Hobbs officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Sue Marie Johnson was born March 22, 1953, in Marshall, Minn., the daughter of Monroe A. "Monk" and Normajean (Hendricks) Johnson. She received her master of arts degree in English and was a teacher at the University of South Dakota until an early retirement due to her health. Sue was an excellent teacher, scholar and literary critic.
In 1984, while working as a teaching assistant in English at U.S.D., she directed a production of Hanay Geiogamah's play, "Foghorn" which was performed in Slagle Hall at the college. That year, she also presented a paper on "The Theatricality of Foghorn" in Washington, D.C., at the annual meeting of the Modern Language Association.
She became the foremost authority on Geiogamah's work. Her literary biographies of the playwright were published in the "Dictionary of Native American Literature," the "Handbook of Native American Literature" and the "Dictionary of Literary."
She was a member of Job's Daughters and the PTA and was a school volunteer at Jolley Elementary School in Vermillion.
Survivors include her mother, Normajean Johnson; a daughter, Sarah Marie Johnson; and a brother, Thomas A. Johnson, all of Vermillion.
She was preceded in death by her father, Monroe A. "Monk" Johnson.
