Three make 2008 Iowa Piano Competition finals

SIOUX CITY -- It will be an international evening tomorrow night at the conclusion of the 2008 Iowa Piano Competition in the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City.

SIOUX CITY -- It will be an international evening tomorrow night at the conclusion of the 2008 Iowa Piano Competition in the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City.

Three contestants -- Miao Hou of China, Chun-Chieh Yen of China and Esther Park of Korea -- Friday played their way into tomorrow night's finale. They beat out fourth-place finisher Polina Bespalko of Russia, fifth-place finisher Cathal Breslin of Northern Ireland and sixth-place finisher Julia Siciliano of the United States.

Trinette Patterson, operations manager for the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, said the judges will chose a concerto movement for the finalists to play with the Symphony at tomorrow night's performance.

The three finalists were not ranked in any particular order. The winner will receive $7,500. All have extensive musical and educational backgrounds.

Hou is pursuing her master's degree at The Juilliard School in New York City. She earned a bachelors degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philedelphia, Pa.

Yen earned diplomas from the Hochscule fur Musik und Theatre in Germany and is pursuing diplomas at the Colburn School Conservatory of Music in Los Angelos.

Park earned her master's degree from The Juilliard School and is attending the Hochschule fur Musik und Theatre.

The final leg of the competition starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 to $36 and are available at the door.
