An issue on which government should be silent
Posted: Sunday, March 16, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- I have to admit, when I first read the paper Tuesday and the article concerning the latest City Council news, I was angry. And you should know that this is my second letter since I deleted a very terse response earlier.
It's hard not to become jaded by the constant waffling of politicians. Striving so very hard to be popular with their approach to any given situation brought before them. You see the first thing that most politicians forget, once they've been elected, is the reason they were elected in the first place and that is the presentation of themselves that they sold to the unknowing public at large.
That being said, I would like to say how proud I am of Mr. Rochester for his courage to be the lone voice of opposition to the "protected status" language which the council seems to be ready to adopt. I voted for Mr. Ferris and Mr. Rixner last time around and I'm saddened to say I was sorely disappointed in both of them Monday - Mr. Ferris for the lack of courage to hold to the moral compass which got him elected and Mr. Rixner for what appears to be a lack of moral compass. At least I won't make the same mistake twice when elections come around again.
By the way, before we start throwing "homophobe" around, I believe everyone should be able to find suitable housing and employment, yet in the same breath I'll tell you how wrong it is to force someone to, by means of housing or employment, support a lifestyle which they hold immoral. This is definitely a time when government should be silent. -- Mark Wyant

You also state the acceptance of imoral acts.. so are u telling us that everything that happens in your bedroom is missonary position, lights off, for procreation only? I doubt it highly... but then that isnt my business, as it is none of your business what other people do in their private lives. If someone were to find out that you did things in the privacy of your own home that were not accepted by the majority, would you want to be told you couldnt buy a house, get a job or live your life? I bet not. "
