USD women advance to Elite Eight

VERMILLION, S.D. -- South Dakota, led by Shannon Daly's career-high 21 points, defeated Minnesota State-Mankato 61-49 Monday night in the championship game of the NCAA Division II North Central Regional women's basketball tournament.
In front of a crowd of 3,120 in the DakotaDome, third-ranked South Dakota won its 29th straight game to advance to the Division II Elite Eight in Kearney, Neb., March 26-27-29.
The Coyotes of Coach Chad Lavin, now 31-1, will meet Washburn University in its first Elite Eight contest on March 26. Washburn (26-6), ranked 24th, defeated 25th-ranked Emporia State (23-8) 73-58 in the South Central Regional title game Monday night in Canyon, Texas.
USD's unbeaten North Central Conference champions earned the school's first-ever berth in the Elite Eight in women's basketball.
Daly, a senior from Groton, S.D., was named the regional most valuable player and was joined on the all-regional team by teammate Jeana Hoffman, along with Tiffany Moe and Heather Johnson of Minnesota State and Kierah Kimbrrough of North Dakota.
Daly, who had 15 points in the first half, made nine of her 13 field goal attempts.
She was joined in double figures by Jenna Hoffman, Jeana's twin sister, who had had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Jeana Hoffman, the co-player of the year in the NCC, had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists.
The Coytes shot 40 percent from the field while Minnesota State connected on 39.1 percent of its shots.
The Mavericks, who led 28-27 at halftime, sank just one of 11 shots from three-point range while USD splashed in six of its 19 shots from beyond the arc.
Alex Andrews, Johnson and Moe collected 11 points each for Minnesota State, which finished the season 23-9.
In winning, USD established a school record for points in a season with 2,437, erasing the previous mark of 2,395 points in 2003-04.
In the regional, the Coyotes also whipped Colorado State-Pueblo (66-55) and Nebraska-Kearney (59-48).
Lavin, the winningest coach in USD women's basketball history, announced before the season this would be his last at the school.
