Mustangs sweep pair from Dordt

Morningside ran its Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball record to 4-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Dordt Monday at Lewis and Clark Park.
Gabe Shockman pitched a five-hit shutout in the opener, won by the Mustangs 7-0. Morningside completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory in the nightcap.
Shockman struck out three and walked one, evening his record at 2-2. The Mustangs scored three runs in the first inning and four in the fifth of the opener.
Nate Gomez had a two-run double in the first and raced home on a double by Brett Hoch. Hoch smacked a three-run homer in the fifth and Dordt committed two errors.
Morningside collected nine hits, two each by Gomez and Hoch. Dordt's Evan Phenegar finished 2-for-3 at the plate while Patrick Sinnema took the pitching loss.
Hoch hit his third homer of the season during a five-run first inning in the second game. Nic Paulsen, David Manceaux, Jared Noteboom added RBI singles and Lewis Dobie a sacrifice fly.
After Dordt cut in to the lead with two runs in the first and second, the Mustangs tacked on three in the fifth on an RBI single by Paulsen and a solo homer by Manceaux.
Hoch and Jason Engleman each finished 3-for-4 while Paulsen and Manceaux chipped in two hits apiece as Morningside outhit Dordt 12-10. Dordt's Bobby Lutke had two hits and drove in three runs while Travis Feekes added two hits.
Dan Lipari, the second of four Mustang pitchers, was the winner. Morningside improved its overall record to 12-5.
