Citywide cleanup begins

By Lynn Zerschling Journal staff writer | Posted: Thursday, March 27, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- The flushers are coming. Followed by the sweepers. It's not a new sports team.

Those pieces of equipment will be taking to city streets as part of a citywide, curb-to-curb cleanup effort.

"Crews will be sweeping and flushing the downtown and outlying business areas during the overnight hours," Brian Fahrendhotz, field services manager, said Wednesday. "Residential areas will be swept and flushed during the daytime hours. We typically sweep all city streets seven times a year."

He said it will take the crews longer to flush and clean the streets during this first cycle because of all the sand, dirt and trash that has washed into the roadways during the winter.

"We have five sweepers and four flushers," he said.

They work in tandem, with a flusher running in front of the sweeper. Once a section of the street is cleaned, the flusher makes a return trip to wash the street from curb to curb.

City Manager Paul Eckert cautioned pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists to watch for that slippery sand and dirt along the streets, which could cause accidents.

Eckert and Fahrendhotz asked residents to continue to clean up their yards of litter and debris so the trash doesn't get flushed down the city's storm drains. If the drains become clogged, flooding could occur during a heavy rain storm.

"We're seeing a good effort to clean up other peoples' litter," Eckert said of residents. "We appreciate that very much. We also would like to include businesses as part of this. We hope they will have employees go outside to clean up debris, such as cigarette butts."

A series of neighborhood spring cleanups will be held starting April 26., according to Tim Knight, president of the Neighborhood Network, and the Rev. Jessie Dupree, the new president of the Westside Coalition.

The cleanups will be at designated locations from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. City employees and Sioux City police officers will provide assistance.

"Last year, neighborhood cleanup efforts collected 100 tons of garbage, 500 tires and 200 appliances," Knight said.

People may bring items to throw away to:

-- April 26: Rose Hill/Jones Street, on 13th Street between Douglas Street and Grandview Boulevard.

-- May 3: Northside, St. Luke's Regional Medical Center parking lot at 28th and Nebraska streets.

-- May 10: Leeds, Leeds pool, 3925 45th St.

-- May 17: Greenville, Third Street between Logan and Paxton streets.

-- May 31: Westside, Cook Park parking lot.

-- June 7: Riverside, Goldie Park parking lot.

Anyone interested in helping with these events should call Knight at 255-7154.

" This is a good move. I moved from SC nearly 20 years ago and am really disappointed in how dirty the city looks whenever I come back to visit. Many city areas seem overgrown, with trash, the sidewalks are in ill repair. I travel to Carroll, Ames, and Des Moines regions and they seem better manicured. This is a positive step for the city and really should be just a start. "

" Will there be any Mornsingside sites for the clean-up? "

" As long as you are cleaning the streets, please check the openings to the sewers. Many are almost closed because of leaves and dirt and some have trees growing out of them. "
