Short films, documentary featured at festival

By Joanne Fox Journal staff writer | Posted: Sunday, March 30, 2008
Audiences will get to see 15 short films and a full-length documentary at this year's Siouxland Film Festival.

Now in its third year, the event showcases independent work in conjunction with graduate student work from Siouxland and across the country at the Orpheum Theatre.

"That first year, I never thought it would be so well accepted," said Joe Case, founder and coordinator of the festival. "I figured it would be a success if we could get about 150 or 200 people to show up."

The second year, people came back; although, not as many as the 700 at the inaugural presentation. Closer to 500 attended

"The weather played a huge factor last year because it was so bitter cold," Case said. "It even impacted travel for one of the filmmakers getting here."

Individuals submitted their short movies on any subject matter (documentary, short fiction, animation, experimental). The movie could be no longer than 15 minutes and made within the last five years for the general public and the previous two years for graduate students.

This year, the festival date was moved from January to March -- in response to the weather, Case said.

"The Final Season," based on the true story of the Norway, Iowa baseball team's state championship run in its last year before merging with another high school, will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Friday. Following the movie there will be a discussion group with the film's producers Tony Wilson and Steve Schott and the Norway baseball coach, Kent Stock. Cost to attend is $6 for adults and $3 for students.

The independent films will be shown at 7 p.m., Saturday. They include: "Happy Birthday Mom" by Joe Clarke; "Making a Killing" by Derek Woods; "Blackbird Rising" by Joe Boyle; "Souvenir" by Insane Mike Saunders; "Of Love and Race" by Tim Tsai; "Walking Away" by Christopher New; "Bloody Mary" by Patrick Bottaro; "The Vaudevillian" by Bryan Nest; "Aurora" by Shaun O'Connell; "End of the Sawdust Trail" by Andy Brodie; "Naked Branches" by Will Kim; "BFF" by Carlos Omar deLeon; "Sioux City Ghosts" by Thomas Ritchie and Jan Dehner; "Fatherland" by Robert Warzecha; and "Nothing Much" by Melissa Lanzourakis.

" I had a film in the festival and made the long drive to and from Iowa City on Saturday for the event. Well worth it... a stunning venue and great local crowd support! Congrats to the festival organizers and the Sioux City community. You've got something really good going. "
