Northwestern takes GPAC baseball pair from Mustangs

Posted: Saturday, April 05, 2008
Northwestern College's baseball team continued to stay atop the Great Plains Athletic Conference race with an 8-2, 5-3 doubleheader sweep over Morningside College Friday afternoon at Lewis and Clark Park.

Earlier this week, a decision was made to move the twin bill to Sioux City because of wet field conditions at Orange City. Morningside, the visiting team on the scoreboard, took a 1-0 first-inning lead when Tom Kohl doubled and scored on Brett Hoch's single.

Northwestern took the lead for keeps in the bottom of the first. Austin Malone doubled, Jake Jansen walked and both scored on Joe Heitritter's single. Two frames later, the Red Raiders' Codie Zeutenhorst hit an RBI double.

Morningside pulled within 3-2 in the fourth inning when pinch-runner Kyle Smith scored on a wild pitch, but back-to-back RBI doubles from Malone and Jansen in the bottom of the fourth increased the Red Raiders' lead to 5-2.

Malone and Jansen each recorded two hits. Winning pitcher Mihai Burlea (5-2) scattered nine hits and walked four while striking out seven.

Kohl and David Manceaux each collected two hits for Morningside. Losing pitcher Wade Morrison (3-2) allowed nine hits and five walks while striking out four in five and two-thirds innings.

Northwestern (14-8, 7-1 GPAC) jumped on losing pitcher Steven Aschinger for four runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Aschinger walked Malone and Grant Wall to set up back-to-back RBI singles for Jansen and Zeutenhorst. Later in the frame, Curt Bomgaars hit a two-run double.

Morningside (12-11, 4-6) scored all of its runs in the sixth inning on Nic Paulsen's three-run home run.

Wall doubled for the Red Raiders. Winning pitcher Joe Grady allowed three hits and three walks while striking out two.

Aschinger yielded six hits and four walks.

Morningside will host Dakota Wesleyan in a GPAC doubleheader that will start at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Lewis and Clark Park. Northwestern will play a league doubleheader at Sioux Falls starting at 1 p.m. today.
