Tri-State trail bicycle ride will be May 17

By Lynn Zerschling Journal staff writer | Posted: Thursday, April 10, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- Bicycle enthusiasts from throughout the region are expected to pedal their way around 57 miles of trails in Siouxland during the Tri-State Trails Tour V on May 17.

"They can do 57 miles or do one mile if they wish," Bob DeSmidt, the foundation president, said Wednesday. "We will offer five different routes they can take."

Those are South Route to Crystal Cove in Nebraska and back, 14 miles; North Route to Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve in South Dakota and back, 24 miles; Perry Creek Trail in Sioux City and back, 6 miles; and optional loops off these routes or any combination of those routes.

"The purpose is to introduce people to our local trail system," DeSmidt said. "We have something unique here. They have the opportunity to ride in thee states in one day."

In prior years, he said, bicyclists from Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa have participated. Another tour attraction is most of the trails are flat, avoiding major hills along the routes.

Proceeds from the bike ride will be used to improve the trails and help pay to build new ones.

Ride registration will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Marina Center in South Sioux City. The tour starts at 10 a.m.

Registration forms also are available at area bicycle shops, the Sergeant Floyd Welcome Center, the parks and recreation department office in the Long Lines Family Rec Center and other locations.

Pre-registration is encouraged and is required to guarantee a T-shirt. The cost is $8 through April 30 and then $10. A family rate will be offered for $20.

Snacks and refreshments at rest stops along the trails will be available free of charge. A chicken lunch will be served at the Marina Center from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or after the ride for $7. T-shirts also may be purchased.

Trails Map
If you are looking for the new trails around Siouxland, you can find them on the second edition of the Siouxland Trails Map. The Siouxland Trails Foundation published the first trail map in 2005, but it's already outdated.
New trails on the 2008 version include the trail from South Sioux City to Dakota City, the Perry Creek Trail in Sioux City, the Dakota Dunes public trail and the Floyd Underlook trail in South Sioux City.
A total of 5,000 maps were printed thanks to a grant from Missouri River Historical Development Inc. The map was designed by the Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council.
The map includes mileage to different destinations and whether the following are available: parking, restrooms, camping, boat ramp, playground/picnic areas, swimming and other amenities. Fifteen destinations are listed, from the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve to Sergeant Bluff trails.
The maps include rules for using the trails for pedestrians, skaters and bicyclists and local contact information.
The free maps are available at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve, the Sergeant Floyd Welcome Center, Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, local parks and recreation offices and bicycle shops. To request a copy by mail, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Siouxland Trails Foundation, PO Box 752, Sioux City, IA 51102.
Electronic versions will be available soon.
