Posted: Monday, April 14, 2008
BLAIR, Neb. -- Briar Cliff University's baseball team is knocking on the door in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings.

Sunday's 10-5, 8-6 doubleheader sweep over Dana College gave the Chargers of Coach Boyd Pitkin five straight victories heading into this afternoon's twin bill at Bishop Newman Field against league opponent Sioux Falls.

Briar Cliff is now 11-3 in the league for a .786 winning percentage. Northwestern tops the GPAC with a 10-2 (.833) mark going into today's twin bill at Orange City, Iowa, against Dana.

Briar Cliff, now 12-16 overall, had to rally to win both games. Dana entered the second inning with a 2-0 lead, but Pitkin's club responded with five runs, a frame that included a two-run double by Andrew Swank along with an RBI double from Andrew Benton.

Benton's 3-for-4 slate also included an RBI double in the third inning. Chris Davis doubled and singled.

Winning pitcher Eric Fox threw a complete game. In seven innings, Fox allowed seven hits and one walk.

Dana lost a 2-1 lead in the second game when Briar Cliff scored seven runs in the third inning.

Matt Lee hit a two-run single in the frame. Benton and Jake Olivas each contributed RBI singles in the third.

Olivas was 2-for-3 to lead the Chargers while Lee was 2-for-4. Davis also doubled.

Tyler Tasker, a senior from Sioux City, allowed three hits and one walk while striking out three in two innings of relief to get credit for the pitching victory.

Garret Linhardt collected a save, allowing three walks while striking out four in one and one-third innings.
