Morningside students recognized at ODK Honors Assembly

SIOUX CITY -- Awards for student achievement, Faculty Person of the Year and other awards were presented Wednesday during the annual Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Assembly at Morningside College.
SIOUX CITY -- Awards for student achievement, Faculty Person of the Year and other awards were presented Wednesday during the annual Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Assembly at Morningside College.
ODK is the national leadership honor society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character.
Randy Campbell, associate professor of mathematical sciences, was voted by the student body as the Faculty Person of the Year for his outstanding contributions to Morningside and its students. He teaches computer science and interdepartmental honors courses at Morningside.
Campbell has been at Morningside since 1995. He has been deeply involved in curricular development, both in computer science and in the general curriculum of the college as a whole. His research interests include the teaching of computer science, applied logic, software systems and computer networks.
Campbell received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Brigham Young University in 1988 and a master's degree in computer science from Brigham Young in 1989.
The First-Year Teaching/Advising Award went to Susanne Lubbers, visiting assistant professor of education. The award, presented with assistance from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church, is given to an exemplary teacher who has helped first-year students succeed in making the transition into college.
Lubbers is in her second year at Morningside. She came to Morningside from Sioux City East High School where she had been a high school language arts teacher since 1992. She was chair of East's English department during the 2004-05 academic year and also served as the school's debate coach and head volleyball coach.
Lubbers graduated from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor of science in education degree in 1991 and earned a master's degree in education from Southwest Minnesota State University in 2006.
Kirk Johnson, director of the physical plant, received the Staff Member of the Year Award.
Johnson joined Morningside's maintenance department in 1991. He was promoted to maintenance supervisor in 1998 and to his current position in 2002. He received a 2005 Thomas S. Thompson Staff Excellence Award and was named Morningside's 2005 Staff Employee of the Year.
Since he became director of the physical plant, Johnson has overseen several major campus renovation and construction projects during the college's current capital campaign, "This Is Our Moment," including the construction of three student apartment style residence halls, renovation of the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center-Allee Gymnasium, completion of the new Yockey Family Community Room and renovations to the main dining room in the Olsen Student Center and the current construction on the Hilker Campus Green Project, including a fountain and outdoor performance center.
The Tommeraasen Award of Excellence for the outstanding campus organization was awarded to the Morningside Student Nursing Association whose mission is to provide programs that represent the fundamental interests and concerns of nursing students while aiding the development of the nursing students' responsibility for the health care of people. The award is presented in honor of the late Miles Tommarasen, former Morningside president.
The ODK Sophomore Cup was awarded to Kendra Kock of Breda, Iowa. This award is given annually to a sophomore for outstanding leadership and campus participation.

The Phi Eta Sigma Senior Book Award for the graduating member of the national freshmen honor society with the highest grade point average: Brian Johnson of Bronson, Iowa.
Male and Female Academic Athlete of the Year awards: Jack Rother, men's basketball player from Wayne, Neb., and Marisha Lenz, women's soccer player from Lincoln. The awards are based on cumulative grade point average and contributions to their sports.
