She's pleased with smoking ban
Posted: Thursday, April 17, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- This is in response to a recent Letter to the Editor headlined "Smokers have rights, too." My answer to that is they don't have the right to poison my air any more than I have the right to poison their water. That is what they are doing.
Winnepeg, Canada, is totally smoke-free, the businesses have not gone broke, nor will ours.
We were at the Argosy the other day. There sat a gentleman hooked to oxygen, playing a machine, smoking a cigarette . I quit and I really don't like being exposed to others people's smoke. I am very pleased this passed. I do not believe the casinos should be exempt. No business should be exempt. -- Phyllis Olson

What Phillis forgets is that people have a choice as to whether or not they will enter an establishment that allows smoking. You assume legal risk, Phillis, when you walk into a restaurant or bar allows it. This is no different than taking the risk of getting into a moving automobile. (Actually, the threat of secondhand smoke--if one may even call it that--is thousands of times smaller than the possibility of getting into an auto accident. Hmmm...maybe you'd like to ban driving, as well?)
