DAKOTA DUNES -- Siouxland golfers are preparing to join Coach Johnny Orr and honorary chair Coach Ray Obermiller in teeing off for a great cause as the 16th annual Siouxland Senior Open approaches.

Returning to Two Rivers Golf Club at Dakota Dunes on May 21, the Senior Open is a benefit for golfers 50 years of age or over held by the Alzheimer's Association, Big Sioux Chapter.

Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.; a banquet and benefit auction will follow at 6 p.m. at the Dakota Dunes Country Club, featuring Obermiller and Orr.Registration is $100 per golfer, including green fees, cart use for 18 holes, gate gifts and the awards banquet.

All proceeds raised directly benefit Senior Day Services, the Alzheimer's Association's adult day program in Sioux City.

The Senior Open also will crown Siouxland's senior golf champion, recognized with the Dale Mogren Memorial Plaque and the Gunderson's Cup.Dale Erwin became a two-time winner last year, adding a second title to go with his 2003 championship.

First established in 1995, Senior Day Services is an activity-based program for Siouxland older adults with cognitive and functional impairments, including, but not restricted to, Alzheimer's disease.

Senior Day Services provides these individuals with a safe, supervised and social environment while offering respite to their caregivers. The service is provided weekdays 7 a,m. to 6 p.m. at the Association's headquarters at 420 Chambers St.

A Siouxland native, Obermiller came to Sioux City Central High School as an assistant coach in 1955 and, by 1957, he was appointed head coach in cross country, golf and swimming, molding seven All-American athletes while coaching the Little Maroons.

After his move to Grinnell College in 1966, Obermiller's swim teams won two national and 20 conference championships. He has been inducted into the Iowa Track Coaches, Iowa Swimming Coaches, Grinnell College Sports and Sioux City Athletics halls of fame.

Orr is a familiar figure to Siouxland sports fans. His Iowa State Cyclones won 218 basketball games during his 14-year tenure and went to the NCAA tournament six times, making it to the round of 16 in 1986.

Recently, he has taken on a new opponent. Not long after he visited the 2002 Siouxland Senior Open, his wife of 55 years was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The Orrs have become tireless advocates for Alzheimer research and support, working alongside the Alzheimer's Association throughout Iowa and educating lawmakers and the community -- even testifying before the U.S. Senate in 2004 about the need for federal support of Alzheimer research.
