NW's Vermeer leads GPAC golf

Dakota Wesleyan, led by Tyler Evenson's 36-36--72 and a 36-39--75 by Ben Abbotts, took the first-day lead Monday in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship at Green Valley.
Wesleyan had a 305 total after 18 holes and Dordt was six shots back at 311.
Dordt's Collin Broekhuis (39-38--77) and Jason Kroese (38-39--77) were tied for ninth with two others, including Ben Keane of Briar Cliff, who carded a 38-39--77.
Northwestern was sixth (318), Briar Cliff eighth (324) and Morningside ninth (325) in the team race.
Individually, Northwestern's Luke Vermeer was the first-day leader, carving out a 36-34-70. Next came Dakota Wesleyan's Evenson and Morningside's Chris Rager was third with a 36-37--73.
Ben Keane turned in the best round for Briar Cliff and was tied for ninth after shooting a 38-39--77.
The tournament continues today at Green Valley with play beginning at 9 a.m.
