Hatch Furniture to close downtown Sioux City store

By Lynn Zerschling Journal staff writer | Posted: Wednesday, April 23, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- The family-owned Hatch Furniture & Flooring, which opened in downtown Sioux City 23 years ago, will close those spring.

"We still are going to be operating out of our Yankton location," owner Ron Hatch said Tuesday. "We still intend to take care of all of our customers, the warranties and deliveries. We do have a warehouse in Sioux City that we will maintain for an extended period of time to service our customers.

"Basically we are consolidating into one location to be more efficient," he explained. "Our operating costs and sales revenue were better in Yankton. Sioux City has been a good store."

Hatch noted the store was founded by his great grandfather, Lucious Hatch, in 1903 in Wakonda, S.D. His grandfather, then his father and uncle ran the business through the years. The family moved the store to Yankton in 1969.

"I entered the business in 1974," and worked at the Yankton location, Hatch noted.

In 1985, Hatch expanded to Sioux City, opening a store at 504 Fourth St. in the former Fantles women's clothing store building. In 1987, the Hatches moved the store to the former Sioux City Stationery building at 413 Pierce St., where it has operated since then.

The store employs a dozen people. None will relocate to the store in Yankton.

In deciding to expand in the 1980s, the family considered opening a second store in Sioux Falls. The main reason they chose Sioux City, Hatch said at the time, was because officials at Younkers department store at Fourth and Pierce streets announced it no longer would sell furniture.

Hatch said no target date has been set for closing.

"It depends upon liquidating all of our inventory here. ...We do intend to offer some incredible values. We still are going to encourage special orders at reduced prices. We still will be able to take care of our Sioux City customers."

Since he lives in Yankton, Hatch said working closer to home has its appeal.

"This will give me a personal opportunity to be more hands on in the Yankton store."

Roger Caudron, executive director of Downtown Partners, said, "We had understood when HOM Furniture announced it was going into the Younkers' building, the folks at Hatch Furniture said they were anxious for that to happen because it would create a cluster of businesses. So we were kind of surprised by the announcement from that standpoint."

HOM Furniture plans to relocate from its store at 125 Nebraska St. to the former Younkers department store space in Town Square. The expanded home furnishings store is expected to open later this summer, taking over the 60,000 square feet on two levels that Younkers vacated in February 2007.

Caudron said, "We will work with Ron, who owns the building, on possible businesses to refill the space or to sell the facility."

" It took awhile but turns out Warren wasn't the visionary he always made himself out to be. Downtown DOES have a future and businesses such as Hatch leaving does not change that. "

" Another nail in the coffin of Downtown Sioux City. Has the "last man" been appointed yet? You know, to turn off the light when they are all gone. "

" When HOM furniture customers start receiving $7.00 parking fines downtown, they'll wish they had stayed at their old location, where parking is free! There's a reason there is no business downtown, and that's a HUGE part of it! "
