Restaurant, bar owners shouldn't worry

Posted: Friday, April 25, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- I understand why people are upset over the smoking ban, and thinking that our rights are being slowly removed. But I don't think all the restaurant and bar owners have to worry. I doubt very much that all the smokers are going to flock to the casinos to eat and drink.

It might hurt business a little bit at first, but the smokers are going to have to eat again sometime. -- Chris Kozak

" Huh: The non-smokers have spent YEARS choosing NOT to go to smoking establishments. You just don't get that do you? Do you honestly think everyone who hates the stench and going home smelling like an ashtray hasn't stayed away? You must be a hard line smoker not to understand that. You're jaded and not seeing things from another's point of view. I understand the argument about the government stepping in. I think it is a weak argument being as these businesses invite the public in and there are already laws they must abide by. Why can't we sit back and see what happens with this ban? 22 states already have it in place, you don't hear anything about it not working or businesses suddenly going belly up. We know how far dedicated smokers will go to smoke, they'll still get it in. "

" Owner, I never said I supported the bill. I didn't have a thing to do with it. That was done by the state government. You foolishly assume all non-smokers are in favor of the bill. I figured bar owners welcomed smokers and non-smokers alike. Apparently you don't. So again, what bar do you own? "

" You can chose not to go to smoking establishments, the way this town talks there are so many non-smokers sick of the smoke, the bars and restaurants should have no problem pulling a profit by going non-smoking. So why haven't they done so already already on their own? They are in the business to make money right? So they must believe that going all non-smoking would hurt business. Now you have completely erased all social establishments for all smokers. They can't call and complain and get owners to go smoking, because its illegal now. Non-smokers are being selfish and lazy.

For the record, I quit smoking 3 years ago. The point is the establishment owner should be making this choice, not the politicians!!! "

" Ber, your such and idiot, I won't even bother to explain it to, please ask your mom to do it.

wow. I know your point, I hear it all the time, but making a law to do it is the wrong way, look at applebees, enough patrons told them they wanted it non-smoking that they made the decision themselves to go non-smoking. That is the way to do it. You talk about improving the social setting for everyone, but it actually only improves the social setting for you and other non-smokers. The majority of the patrons of bars, are smokers. So you have actually made the social setting worse for alot of people to satisfy your own selfish desire. You don't like smoke in a bar, find a non-smoking bar, convince a smoking bar to non-smoking, or just open a non-smoking bar of your own. You apparently feel that there is enough people that want a non-smoking bar you could be a millionaire in no time. "
