Morningside wins twice in GPAC baseball tournament

HASTINGS, Neb. -- Morningside and Dakota Wesleyan each finished 2-0 on the opening day of the Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball tournament here Thursday.

The third-seeded Mustangs held off Nebraska Wesleyan 10-8 in the first round before outscoring crosstown rival Briar Cliff 12-7 in a second-round game. Dakota Wesleyan, the No. 5 seed, surprised top-seeded Northwestern 11-10 in 10 innings in the second round after clipping fourth-seeded Midland Lutheran 1-0.

Morningside, now 29-14 overall, plays Dakota Wesleyan (23-19) at 9 a.m. today.

The Mustangs of Coach Jim Scholten broke open their game against Briar Cliff with a seven-run third inning. David Manceaux, who finished 3-for-3 with a homer, double, triple and four RBIs, had a two-run double in the third while Jared Noteboom added an RBI double and Lino Esparza and Lewis Dobie run-scoring singles.

Manceaux's RBI triple and an RBI single by Nick Paulsen staked Morningside to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Briar Cliff evened the score with two unearned runs in the top of the third before the Mustangs exploded for seven in the bottom half.

Manceaux added a solo homer in the fourth and Brett Hoch a two-run shot in the fifth, giving the Mustangs a 12-3 lead. Before Thursday, only three home runs had been hit at spacious Duncan Field the entire season.

Hoch had a homer and single for Morningside and Paulsen a double and single. Briar Cliff's Chris Davis rapped two doubles and a single while Andrew Benton contributed two singles.

Steven Aschinger, who spaced five hits in five innings, was the winning pitcher, running his season record to 6-3. Morningside collected 13 hits off four different Briar Cliff hurlers.

Briar Cliff, now 19-23 after splitting games on Thursday, plays Hastings in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. today. Northwestern will meet either Nebraska Wesleyan or Sioux Falls in another elimination tilt at 11 a.m.

Briar Cliff, the No. 2 seed, downed defending tournament champion Sioux Falls in the first round, 10-4, scoring six runs in the first inning and never looking back.

Davis went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored while Andrew Swank had two hits and drove in three runs. Charlie Benz picked up the pitching victory, his sixth of the season, with relief help from Tyler Tasker and Trent Schneider.

Morningside, meanwhile, held on for a 10-8 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan. The Prairie Wolves trailed 10-7 heading into the top of the seventh inning and scored a run, then had runners on first and third with one out when Eric Delich got Matt Coatman to ground into a game-ending double play.

The Mustangs' Noteboom was 3-for-3 with a two-run homer, RBI triple and single. Jason Wysong had an RBI double in the second inning and a run-scoring single in the third while Jason Engleman and Manceaux each added two hits and an RBI, and Esparza two hits. Brad Donovan, who relieved starter Wade Morrison with two outs in the fifth inning, was the winning pitcher.

Top-seeded Northwestern topped host Hastings 7-1 in the opening round behind Mihai Burlea, who went the distance on the mound, allowing only an unearned run while striking out six and walking three. Brad Payne had two hits and drove in three runs for the Red Raiders while Grant Wall added a couple of base hits.

No statistics were made available at presstime for the Northwestern-Dakota Wesleyan game.
