2 Northwest Iowa students qualify for national history contest

DES MOINES -- Two Northwest Iowa students are among 26 Iowa students who competed in the National History Day in Iowa contest Monday and earned a trip to the NHD National Contest June 15-19 at the University of Maryland. Five other Northwest Iowa students received special awards.

The 26 national qualifiers were among about 300 Iowa students competing in the NHD in Iowa senior division (grades 9-12) contest at the State Historical Building in Des Moines. They join 25 Iowa students from last week's NHD in Iowa junior division (grades 6-8) contest who also advanced to the NHD National Contest.

NHD in Iowa events will include a gala from 5:30 to 9 p.m. May 16 at the State Historical Building in Des Moines. Reservations are $18 per person and can be made by contacting Millie Frese at (515) 281-6860 or millie.frese@iowa.gov.

The two NHD Iowa senior division national qualifiers from Northwest Iowa are:

-- Katherine Tindall of Akron-Westfield Community Schools at Akron qualified in the Individual Performance category. The title of her project was "The Consequence for Lack of Compromise: Mary Mallon and the Public Health Department. Her teacher is Valorie Phillips.

-- Kristine Davis of Storm Lake High School qualified in the Individual Documentary category. Her project was titled "Safe Haven: Dealing With Conflicts in Europe While Searching for Compromise in America." Her teacher is Roberta Moore.

 

Five Northwest Iowa students received special awards in the senior division:

 

-- Palani Parmeswaran of Le Mars Community High School received a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by Graceland University for Outstanding Use of Primary Sources. Her project was entitled "The Tuskegee Experiment: A Compromise to Overcome the Conflict of African Americans in the Army Air Corps." Her teacher is Jeanne Rust.

-- Michael Schulz, Collin Shultz and Darren Johnson, all of Storm Lake High School won the Camp Silo Award sponsored by the Silo and Smokestacks Heritage Area for their project, "Herbert Hoover: Relief During Conflict." Their teacher is Korey Cantrell.

-- Sarah Kaemingk of Unity Christian High School at Orange City received the Outstanding Entry in Women's History Award sponsored by the General Federation of Women's Clubs of Iowa for her project, "The Women's Suffrage Movement in the United States."
