WAYNE, Neb. -- Defense is the specialty of Chris Kielsmeier, who was announced Thursday as Wayne State College's new head women's basketball coach Thursday by athletic director Eric Schoh.
Kielsmeier comes to Wayne State after serving eight years as the head women's basketball coach at Howard Payne University, which went 33-0 this past season while winning the NCAA Division III national championship. He takes over for Ryun Williams, who resigned after 10 seasons to become the new head women's basketball coach at the University of South Dakota
Kielsmeier compiled a 179-44 record at Howard Payne. In his tenure with the school located in Brownwood, Texas, the school's winningest women's basketball coach developed a trademark of stellar defense. Over the last seven seasons, opponents shot just 34 percent from the field.
Howard Payne ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense with a 47.5 average this past season. In 2006-07, the Jackets led Division III, allowing just 44.2 points per game while posting a 28-2 record.
An Iowa native, Kielsmeier graduated from Hubbard-Radcliffe High School and graduated from Iowa State University in 1999. He served as an intern for the ISU women's basketball program under head coach Bill Fennelly.
Kielsmeier became the assistant women's basketball coach at Howard Payne in the 1999-2000 season before taking over as head coach in 2000. He started the first of five straight 20-win seasons in 2003-04 when his squad posted a 20-7 record.
Kielsmeier has coached 40 American Southwest Conference all-conference players, 40 all-academic selections and two All-Americans along with two players who won ASC freshman of the year honors.
"I am extremely excited about becoming a member of the Wildcat family," said Kielsmeier. "From the time I arrived on campus, I felt the family atmosphere. I look forward to continuing the success of the Wayne State College women's basketball program and working hard to take it to another level."
Wayne State went 22-10 in the 2007-08 season, advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II North Central Regional. The Wildcats graduated only two players from a squad that opened the regional with an 85-78 upset over sixth-ranked North Dakota State before falling to Minnesota State 64-62.
