Dr. Richard Hettinger of Sioux City completed his one-year term as president of the Iowa Dental Association when his successor was elected at the Association's annual session last weekend at the Polk County Convention Complex in Des Moines.
Hettinger will continue to serve in the leadership of the association as immediate past president.
"It has been an honor to serve the Iowa Dental Association and our member dentists this past year as president," Hettinger said. "Through that time, we continued to commit ourselves to strengthening and expanding access to dental health care for all Iowans through initiatives like the ongoing Donated Dental Services program and the annual statewide Give Kids a Smile campaign in February.
"We also laid the groundwork for the inaugural Iowa Mission of Mercy in Waterloo this October. During this past legislative session, among our successes was passing legislation that improves patient protection by allowing external review of adverse dental necessity decisions by insurance companies, a patient protection available for virtually all Iowa issued medical policies."
Hettinger is a lifelong resident of Sioux City and a graduate of Briar Cliff University and the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He has practiced general dentistry at the Dental Depot in Sioux City for 27 years and has been active in organized dentistry for many years. He has served as an officer of the Sioux City Dental Society and held all leadership positions of the Northwest District before being elected district trustee to the Iowa Dental Association Board. He is also an active member of the American Dental Association.
Hettinger also served as base dental surgeon for the 185th Tactical Fighter Group of the Iowa Air National Guard, retiring as a lieutenant colonel after 22 years of service. He also is a member of the boards of directors of the Noon Sertoma Club and public radio station KWIT and an officer of the Leeds Community Club.
