DES MOINES -- Dorothy Wagner of Sioux City was awarded this year's Iowa Dental Association President's Award at the association's annual session at the Polk County Convention Complex in Des Moines early this month.
"Dorothy has dedicated much of her life to serving the Iowa Dental Association and oral health care in Iowa," said Dr. Richard Hettinger of Sioux City, immediate past president of the Iowa Dental Association who nominated Wagner for the award. "We feel privileged to count Dorothy among the many fine representatives of our industry in Iowa."
With a background in elementary education and being a teacher in the Sioux City schools, it was only natural for Wlagner to become interested in dental health education programs for second grade children.
It started as a "Tooth Trunk" full of dental health education materials but has developed into a dentist visit to all second grade classrooms in the Sioux City area.
Wagner has held numerous offices in the Northwest District Alliance including two terms as president. She also served two terms as president of the Iowa Chapter of the Alliance to the American Dental Association.
On the national level of the Alliance, she served as a member of the Dental Health Committee for 13 years and was District VI trustee for six years. In addition, she was a member of the committee that hosted the national Alliance Leadership Conference in Cedar Rapids in 1996.
Wagner was the first Iowan to receive the Thelma J. Neff Distinguished Service Award given by the Alliance of the ADA. She also has received community awards from the Junior League of Sioux City and the "Women of Excellence" Award.
Wagner is the wife of Dr. Richard G. Wagner, a retired orthodontist. They have two sons, Rick, an orthodontist, and David, a head and neck surgeon. Both sons practice in Sioux City.
