USD women win final NCC track crown

SIOUX FALLS -- The University of South Dakota women made a lasting impression Saturday in the final North Central Conference track and field championships.
With the league disbanding at the conclusion of the the 2007-08 school year, the USD women tallied a record 255 points, winning 12 of 22 events to claim its fifth straight title .
In the two-day meet at Howard Wood Field, the Coyote women erased the previous league record of 239.33 points by North Dakota State in 2002.
The final men's NCC outdoor title went to Minnesota State-Mankato with 283.5 points. USD finished second with 167 points and Minnesota-Duluth was third with 115.5.
Coyote high hurdler Terry Liggins also went into the league history books by becoming the first to win the NCC 110-meter high hurdles outdoors and the indoor 60-meter highs four straight years.
Liggins won the 110 highs in 14.86 seconds Saturday and then roared home first in the 400 intermediates in ;54.08.
Also for the USD men, Ben Walters won the hammer throw, finished second in the shot put and was third in the discus. Teammate Preston Scott was the discus champ and the Coyotes also got a first place from Colte Haines in the triple jump.
Coach Dave Gotsleben, in his 24th season as USD men's coach, directed the Coyotes to first or second in the final 14 league meets. USD won the first-ever NCC track crown in 1922.
The USD women had double individual winners in Jasmine Mosley (shot put, discus) and Ramsey Kavan (5,000 and 10,000) and All-American Stephanie Gebhart anchored winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays and also won her third straight NCC 400 in 54.62 seconds.
Shaneka Parkes added the javelin gold medal and Danielle Dornbusch won the hammer event as as USD athletes won the four throwing events for the first time in history.
The South Dakota women's outdoor championship was its eighth and Coach Lucky Huber has now directed the program to seven outdoor and seven indoor crowns.
Also for USD, Emma Erickson won the 800, Lindsay House took the 100-meter hurdles and Amber Hegge was the triple jump winner.
Minnesota State-Mankato was a distant second in the women's competition with 164 points.
Next up for South Dakota qualifiers will be the NCAA Division II outdoor nationals May 22-24 in Walnut, Calif.
IIAC at Waverly
In the Iowa Conference track and field meet in Waverly, host Wartburg won the men's title with 186 points and women's crown with 229.25 points. The Buena Vista men were fourth (105) and women ninth (21.5).
Buena Vista's Eric Bertelsen was named the outstanding men's performer after winning the long jump, 200 and contributing a leg on a victorious 4x100 relay, along with a second in the 100 and a second as part of a 4x400 relay.
BV's Shaun Olorundami, a graduate of Sioux City West, won the 110 high hurdles in 14.90 seconds and was third in the 200.
NSIC at Wayne State
Host Wayne State won its third straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's track and field title Saturday in Wayne, Neb., scoring 164 points to edge the University of Mary with 156.5.
Wayne State's Nate Preston, a junior from Omaha (Benson) was named the NSIC newcomer of the year after winning the 3,000 steeplechase, 10,000 meters and 5,000.
Wildcat Coach Marlon Brink was also named conference coach of the year.
Wayne State's other winners in the men's meet were Ben Jansen in the 800 in 1:53.27 and Brett Suckstroff in the hammer and discus.
Mary won the women's title with 214.5 points and Wayne State was third with 106. Wayne's Katie Wilson won the hammer and discus titles, Sarah Thomsen won the 3,000 steeplechase and Rachel Roebke set a meet record of 14.28 seconds in winning the 100-meter hurdles.
