Hiring incentives offered for health workers
Posted: Monday, May 12, 2008
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The state is taking applications for a program offering a $5,000 incentive to health professionals who commit to a two-year contract in rural areas.
Sixty specialists signed agreements with facilities in 30 counties last year.
"The final slots were filled by the lottery system," said state Health Secretary Doneen Hollingsworth. "We hope to fill all 60 slots early in the program this year."
Eligible health professionals include dietitians or nutritionists, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, paramedics, pharmacists and respiratory therapists. Certified medical technologists, medical laboratory technologists and radiologic technologists are also eligible.
The state pays 50 percent of the $5,000 incentive in communities over 2,500 population and 75 percent in smaller towns. The community pays the remainder of the incentive.
Applications must be submitted by the facility that will be the employer. Selection begins July 1 with up to two applications chosen per county until the 60 slots are filled.
