Morningside captures GPAC All-Sports Trophy

Posted: Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Thanks to a league-high four championships, Morningside College has won the Great Plains Athletic Conference all-sports Trophy outright for the first time.

The Mustangs tied for the all-sports trophy a year ago, marking the first time in the school's four years in the GPAC it was awarded the all-sports championship.

The league awards points in an inverse order of finish, scoring 13 for a first-place finish in any sport, including those in which all 13 schools don’t field a team.

In 2007-08, Morningside finished eighth or better in all but one sport, earning 190 combined points, including league highs of 100.5 in GPAC men's sports, and 89.5 in GPAC women's sports.

Hastings, finishing in the top four in 10 of the league's 19 sports, was runner-up to Morningside with 179.5 points.

Nebraska Wesleyan, which shared the all-sports trophy with the Mustangs a year ago, was third with 170 points.

Others with over 100 points were Northwestern, fourth with 163, followed by Concordia at 144.5, Doane 138.5, Sioux Falls 137, Midland Lutheran 116, Dordt 114 and Briar Cliff 110.

BCU, which has 18 of the league's 19 sports, all but men's tennis, earned 55.5 in men's sports and 54.5 in women's competition.

Dakota Wesleyan scored 91.5, Dana 85.5 and Mount Marty, which has only 12 sports, 33.5.

This marked just the third time in the eight-year history of the conference that Nebraska Wesleyan didn't win -- or share -- the all-sports trophy.

Morningside tied Doane with a conference-high four league championships, earning titles in women's soccer, men's and women's basketball and volleyball.

Doane won all four league track crowns, claiming both the men's and women's indoor and outdoor titles.

Sioux Falls and Nebraska Wesleyan were next in line with three championships each. The Cougars won the football title while also claiming crowns in men's tennis and women's golf.

The Prairie Wolves earned league titles in men's and women's cross country and women's tennis, which it shared with Dordt.

Other championships went to Concordia (softball), Dana (wrestling), Northwestern (baseball), Dakota Wesleyan (men's golf) and Hastings (men's soccer).

Morningside, Hastings and Sioux Falls are the only league members that participate in all 19 sports. Concordia, Doane, Midland Lutheran and Nebraska Wesleyan join Briar Cliff with 18 sports.
