Refinery opponents set forums prior to June 3 vote

Posted: Thursday, May 15, 2008
NORTH SIOUX CITY -- The Save Union County Ballot Question Committee will host an informational forum on the oil refinery/energy center proposed for Union County from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Dakota Valley Elementary School at 1150 Northshore Dr. in McCook Lake.

Voters will get a chance in the June 3 election to affirm or deny the zoning granted to Texas-based Hyperion Resources for the $10 billion project it plans north of Elk Point, S.D.

Forum speakers will include: James Hoefelmeyer, assistant professor of chemistry at the University of South Dakota; Dean Spader, professor emeritus of political Science at USD; Mary Jo Stueve of South Dakota Clean Water; and Juliana Williams, Midwest organizer for the Sierra Club Student Coalition.

While the speakers will all be available for individual conversations in the morning and during lunch, which will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., each presentation in the afternoon will be followed by a question and answer period to assure the public that the responses may be heard by everyone.

This is the second in a series of forums to be sponsored by SUCBQC, an affiliate of the refinery opposition group Save Union County Committee, in an effort to allow the public access to a number of resources to assist them in making an informed choice on the June 3 ballot question.

Another forum will be in Alcester, S.D., next week and another in Spink, S.D., on May 31.

" Interesting! SUC advertises their forums and they are open to the public. What do you bet the Co Commissioners do NOT show up though? The Gov of SD shows up in Spink but it's a hush, hush, photo op. He didn't advertise, and he didn't want the people most affected by this disaster to be present and ruin his big opportunity for pro-Hyperion publicity. This project is wrong for our CO and wrong for the State. Please vote NO!! to save our county!! "

" Great, will the Union County Commissioners be there to answer questions about, taxes, infastructure,
schools, police, signs?
How about the attorney?
How about the State Senators?
How about the Gov. Rounds? "
