DES MOINES - It took until the twilight that settled over Drake Stadium Thursday evening before the stars of Sioux City high school track appeared.
In the final Class 4A girls event of the first day of the Iowa State Track Meet teammates Ellen Dougherty and Emily McCarthy of East chased Davenport North's AG Bradford to a blazing victory in the 400 meters in 55.66 seconds.
Sophomore Dougherty was third in :56.07 and McCarthy, a junior, was fourth in a personal 57.02 seconds.
At the finish, Samantha Cameron of Bettendorf leaned past Dougherty to claim second in :55.88.
"It was the fastest race I've ever been in,'' said Dougherty. "Right to the end I thought I'd beat her (Bradford). Everybody's talking about her.''
McCarthy agreed. "The pace was so fast, but it makes you run all the faster, too.''
Earlier in the day, Bradford won the high jump title with a 4A state meet record of 5-8.
Dougherty's other brother, Andy, qualified for the 200 finals with a :22.70 prelim, but his :50.46 in the 400 finals was good enough for no better than 10th after running a personal best of :49.42 in the district.
Meanwhile, West High's Gabriel Williams led the qualifying in the girls 100 in 12.30 seconds, her swiftest ever in fully automatic timing.
Second in the qualifying was Faith Burt of Cedar Falls, who will aim for her fourth straight state 100 title and 11th overall. Burt was also the qualifying leader in the 200.
"I feel I can beat Faith,'' said Williams. "That's what I'm working for. She's pretty much unbeatable, but I'll try my best.''
Williams's teammates Cheyanne Simon, Rae Twohig and Monique Pearson didn't make it out of the 100 and 200 prelims, respectively. Twohig was fourth in the 200 last year.
All four, though, will run on West's 4x100 and 4x200 relays that hope to claim state titles.
West Des Moines Dowling's Katie Flood won the girls 3,000 in 9:46.04 and, running with her sister, Betsy, helped Dowling to a state meet record 9:17.38 win in the 4x800, also the eighth-best all-time. Katie, a sophomore, ran a 2:15.6 and Betsy, a senior, anchored in 2:15.9.
Katie Flood's 3K was the sixth-fastest prep time in the U.S. this year.
