Hinton makes return trip to state meet

LE MARS, Iowa -- Hinton, last year's Iowa Class 1A state runner-up, captured a district title at Le Mars Municipal Golf Course here Saturday, totaling 312 to 322 for runner-up Newell-Fonda.

The top two teams and top four individual finishers and ties qualified for next week's state meet at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore.

Nate Freed of Hinton earned medalist honors with a 37-37--74 while Nate Bruggeman of Harris-Lake Park won a one-hole playoff with Hinton's Cory Westphal for runner-up honors. Bruggeman shot 37-38--75 and Westphal 38-37--75.

Other individual qualifiers were Greg Kolpin of Aurelia and Conner Juilfs of Newell-Fonda, who each carded 39-37--76.

Hinton also counted Dustin Kruse with 38-43--81 and Zach Schoenrock with 41-41--82. Newell-Fonda's other counters were Evan Franzmeier (38-41--79), James Tiedeman (39-43--82) and Alex Vanderhoff (41-44--85).

Aurelia wound up third in the team standings at 326, followed by West Monona (329), Rock Valley (332), Woodbury Central (336), Harris-Lake Park (339), Southern Cal (341), Boyer Valley (345), Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn (355) and Clay Central-Everly (381).

Class 2A at Fort Dodge

Cherokee claimed the team title in a Class 2A district at Lakeside Golf Course here Friday, finishing at 308. Carroll Kuemper and Emmetsburg tied for second, but Kuemper was awarded a state tournament berth after its fifth golfer scored lower than Emmetsburg's.

The top two teams and top four individual finishers (plus ties) qualify for the state tournament at Lake Panorama next weekend.

Matt Pitts of Cherokee earned medalist honors with a 39-33--72 while Neil Malenke of Orange City Unity Christian was runner-up after winning a shootout with four other players with a birdie on the second playoff hole. Malenke shot 36-39--75.

Other state qualifiers were Matt Baschke of Okoboji (36-39--75), Nate Molak of Kuemper (36-39--75), Matt Ohl of Okoboji (35-40--75) and Brock Benson of Cherokee (38-37--75).

Rounding out the team scoring were Okoboji at 321, South O'Brien 325, Eagle Grove 327, Sibley-Ocheyedan 330, Unity Christian 341 and IKM-Manning 341.
