FREMONT, Neb. (AP) -- The Fremont Police Department is scheduling more officers to motorcycle and bike patrols as it struggles with high gas prices for its cruisers.

Lieutenant Jeff Elliott says the patrols aren't new, but are being utilized more while the weather is nice.

The department assigns three or four officers a day to the alternative patrols, usually with one on motorcycle per shift.

Elliott says the department is leasing motorcycles from Harley-Davidson through the summer for $1. It's part of a special program for police departments.
