Posted: Saturday, May 24, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- From basketball, billiards and bowling to track, tennis and Taekwondo, the Iowa Games Annual Sports Festival will feature more sporting events than ever this summer.

Entry booklets with complete information about registration, all sporting events, dates and cities where they will be held are now available at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. Online registration is also available at www.IOWAGAMES.org.

This year's event will feature athletes from every county in the state competing in the largest amateur sporting event. More than 17,500 athletes participated in the 2007 Summer Iowa Games and with the growth of many sports and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing approaching, numbers are expected to increase this year.

The 2008 keynote speaker will be 2007 Miss Iowa, Diana Reed. She will speak at the opening ceremony as well as other events throughout the 2008 Summer Iowa Games. The opening ceremony will be at 7:45 p.m. July 18 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. It will feature a parade of athletes, music, lighting of the cauldron and a fireworks display.

New sports in 2008 will be handball and the "State Championship" Par 3 Golf Tournament. The Iowa Sports Foundation anticipates a great year also from some of the newer sports added such as adventure racing, adult baseball, cycling tour ride and western action shoot.

The Iowa Sports Foundation which oversees the Iowa Games is a nonprofit sports management organization that helps develop amateur sports in Iowa and promotes positive lifestyles and physical fitness through athletic events and health education programs.

The Foundation hosts the Summer Iowa Games, Winter Iowa Games, Live Healthy America, Live Healthy Iowa, Go The Distance, Go The Distance Day, Hoopin' at the Dome, Net Fest, Fish Iowa Games, and the Iowa Games Golf Classic.

Iowa Health System, the parent organization of St. Luke's, is a longtime sponsor of the Iowa Games and serves on the Iowa Sports Foundation Board of Directors.

In addition to distributing the Iowa Games entry booklets at St. Luke's, here are other locations where the booklets can be picked up: Hy-Vee stores throughout the state, participating Central Iowa Ford Dealers, Subway locations, U.S. Bank locations, U.S. Cellular locations, Casey's General Stores, local parks and recreation departments, and YMCAs/YWCAs.
