Union County needs the opportunities Hyperion presents

Posted: Sunday, May 25, 2008
AKRON, Iowa -- Oh, for the good old days when each farmer took a case of eggs to the grocer, hoping it would pay for the weekly grocery bill, and perhaps enough for a lunch at one of three or four cafes in town -- or perhaps a can of cream to take to one of the produce buyers in town or a trip to town to the bank to borrow a little money, hoping to pay it back by selling some hogs at the stockyards.

And oh for the good old days when each rural church was full on Sunday with people who lived on many farms in close proximity -- when each rural school was full of kids from each farm.

However, those days are over. Farming has forever changed. You can't sell eggs or milk unless you are a very large operator. Half of former farm sites no longer exist. School student populations decline in our towns, which puts the future of their schools in question. By the way, Hyperion will pay a hefty property tax bill, which should benefit everyone.

The Union County section I live in and the four sections north, south, east and west had 18 operating farms when I was a boy. Now there are only four operating farms in those five sections. I do not consider my farm an operating farm, but my land is farmed. Agriculture will continue in Union County, but in a new, modern way.

If we want Union County and the entire area to prosper, we need a new vision. We need new opportunities, not for those of my generation, but for the new generations to come. Jobs and prosperity will follow when we approve the Hyperion project. Vote yes on June 3. Don't let us lose this opportunity. -- Dennis E. Hultgren

" Lynn B - Your comments are almost poetic. What were you smoking when you wrote it?
Our niece, who has three young children, has just been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. I will share your thoughts with her about we all have to die someday. I'm sure that will be great comfort to her family as they struggle during the days ahead.
Maybe you have a child or grandchild who could live near or work in the proposed refinery. And maybe you can share your bits of wisdom with her if she gets the Big C diagnosis too.
Those things tend to take on a different meaning when it hits home. "
