Newell-Fonda golfers second at 1A state

LIVERMORE, Iowa -- Newell-Fonda's boys golf team was one stroke shy of a state championship when competition at the Class 1A state tournament concluded Saturday.

Northern University High of Cedar Falls outscored the Mustangs and Mason City Newman 683-684 in action at Spring Valley Golf Course.

Spencer Baak, a Newell-Fonda senior, bounced back from an 85 on Friday to shoot a 75 on Saturday. Baak placed third individually with a 160, three strokes behind Jon Tink of Walnut Ridge Baptist.

Tink, who entered Saturday's play leading with a 77, beat Northern University High's Ben Peterson by one stroke.

James Tiedeman shot a 171 (87-84) for Newell-Fonda. The Mustangs also got scoring from Alex Vanderhoff (88-88 -- 176) and Conner Juilfs (84-93 -- 177).

Hinton, which finished second last year and won the Class 1A state title in 2006, tied with Avoca AHST and Coon Rapids-Bayard for fifth with 711. Nate Freed shot a 171 (85-86) to pace the Blackhawks. Rounding off the scoring for Coach Bruce Held's squad were Cory Westphal (86-86 -- 172), Dustin Kruse (91-90 -- 181) and Michael Mehrer (94-94 -- 188).

East Buchanan placed fourth at the 1A state meet with a 688. Clinton Prince of Peace (729) and New London (767) also participated.

Unity Christian sophomore Neil Malenke placed third individually in Class 2A state action at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora with a two-day total of 160 (79-81). Gilbert's Ryan McKilligan was the medalist with a 154 while Cascade's Justin Weber was the runner-up medalist (160).

Cherokee finished sixth in the eight-team meet with a 701. Brock Benson (77-88 -- 165) led the Braves and was followed in the scoring column by Matt Pitts (85-90 -- 175), David Cook (93-84 -- 177) and Scott Brown (102-86 -- 188).

Okoboji had two players in individual competition, Matt Ohl (88-79 -- 167) and Matt Baschke (91-95 -- 186).

PCM Monroe outscored Gilbert 658-659 for the Class 2A title. Hudson (675), Kuemper Catholic (675), Garner-Hayfield (695), Louisa-Muscatine (713) and Dyersville-Beckman (723) also participated.

Spencer finished fifth in Class 3A state competition at Coldwater Golf LInks in Ames with a two-day total of 663. Freshman Jay Monahan led the Tigers with a sixth-place round of 157 (77-80) while teammates Michael Clark (80-84 -- 164), Craig Cunningham (82-86 -- 168) and Jordan Oltman (89-87 -- 176) also figured in the scoring.

Ballard outscored Clear Lake 632-645 for the title. Third-place Pella (648) was followed by Washington (650), Spencer, Carroll (674), Central Clinton (681), Red Oak (708) and Western Dubuque (716).

Carroll senior Kirby Pettit was the medalist with a 144 (70-74) while Indepence's Jake Thomas was the runner-up with a 150 (72-78).
