Hinton girls stand second in state golf meet

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- Hinton shot 376 in the opening round of the Iowa Class 1A girls state golf tournament Tuesday at the American Legion Golf Course. The Blackhawks trail leader Grundy Center by 16 strokes.

Kaitlin Rodgers paced Hinton with 87 and is tied for third individually with Brittney Cole of Grundy Center. Lamoni's Amanda Butler had the low round with a 79.

Hinton also counted Erin Hedlund with 91, Britni Freed 85 and Stephanie Smith with 103.

Turkey Valley stands third with 389, followed by New London (393), West Monona (401), Coon Rapids-Bayard 409), Mount Ayr (432) and Midland (434).

West Monona's Cassie Stukenholtz shot 92, Lindsey Reitz 95, Kelsie Hardison 105 and Megan Pratt and Julie Phillips 109.

MOC-Floyd Valley is third in the Class 3A team standings after carding 408 at Elmwood Country Club. Washington leads the way with 367 while Ballard shot 407 for second.

The Dutch were paced by Paige Blythe with 98 while Jessica Locker shot 101, Jesse Krull 103 and Melanie Babcock 106.

Knoxville (414), Clear Lake (418), Spirit Lake (418), Vinton-Shellsburg (431) and Crestwood (451) round out the 3A standings.

Spirit Lake's counters were Nikki Nielsen with 98, Ashley Nielsen 101, Maureen Owens 109 and Katie Hansen 110.

Kaurie Kincaid of Knoxville is the individual leader with an 80.

Hampton-Dumont tops the Class 2A team standings with a 376-385 lead over Beckman. The 2A tournament is also at the American League Course.

Emmetsburg is sixth after the opening round with 409, two in back of fifth-place Clarinda. Abby Bird paced the E-Hawks with 96 while April Corley had a 103, Katie Heddinger 104 and Megan Myers 106.

Beckman's Paige Klostermann fired a 77 while Colleen Carroll of Davenport Assumption had a 79.

The second round takes place today.
