STORM LAKE, Iowa -- More than 450 voting members and guests of the Western Iowa Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will meet in synod assembly June 6 and 7 at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.
Assembly voting members, both adult and youth, are selected by the 165 ELCA congregations of the Western Iowa Synod which covers approximately the western half of Iowa. Assembly voting members also include pastors and associates in ministry rostered with the Western Iowa Synod.
Theme of this year's assembly is "Living in God's Amazing Grace: Faithful and Bold." Special guests will be the Rev. Dr. Kathryn Love, assistant director for Evangelizing Church and director for Prayer and Spiritual Renewal of the ELCA; keynote speaker, the Rev. Dr. Craig Koester, professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary, St. Paul; musician and worship leader Jay Beech, and the Rev. Doug Johnson, president and CEO of Lutheran Services in Iowa.
Western Iowa Synod Bishop Michael Last will preach at the Friday evening worship service and will preside as the assembly meets in plenary session.
A special focus of this year's assembly will be the ELCA Book of Faith initiative which invites the whole church to become more fluent in the first language of faith, the language of scripture, in order that we might live into our calling as a people renewed, enlivened, empowered and sent by the Word.
In addition, a hearing on the ELCA Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality will be held. Norma Hirsch, a member of the ELCA task force working on the draft will facilitate the hearing. After a period of time for ELCA members to comment on the draft, the task force will make revisions and it will be placed on the 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly agenda for action.
Assembly delegates and guests will also be able to participate in a Ministry Fair, forums and workshops throughout the event.
The Western Iowa Synod Assembly is the highest legislative authority of the Western Iowa Synod, one of 65 synods in the ELCA. The assembly meets annually to worship together, to deliberate, to enjoy fellowship and to learn about and celebrate the ministry and mission congregations share as part of the Western Iowa Synod ELCA.
