STORM LAKE, Iowa -- For the seventh consecutive year, the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring "A Taste of Storm Lake," a community picnic fundraiser for non-profit organizations.
The events take place every Thursday throughout the summer, starting with this coming Thursday.
"This is the second year in a row our location is the Buena Vista County Courthouse lawn and we partner with the Farmers Market," said Marilyn Monson, managing director of the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce. "With the added space and green grass along with some shade is the reason we have had great crowds and the nonprofits have raised more money."
In 2007, $19,000 was raised during 14 events and there was a total of 4,300 people served. The non-profits often have various types of entertainment or other activities during the evening. Serving is from 5 to 7 p.m. or until the food runs out. Take-outs are available.
The nonprofits often tell the menu to the Chamber in advance so persons can call the Chamber office to find out details about the evening event. Monson noted the July 3 event will be the only one not located on the courthouse lawn. It will take place at Chautauqua Park in conjunction with Storm Lake's July 4th Star-Spangled Spectacular.
The Taste of Storm Lake schedule includes June 5, St. Mary's School; June 12, Buena Vista County 4-H; June 19, Storm Lake Schools' Before and After School programs; June 26, Sara Lee/Community Education; July 3, Habitat for Humanity; July 10, Tyson/March of Dimes; July 17, Sara Lee/Faith Home and Charity; (also on that evening a circus promotion will be held for the circus coming to Storm Lake July 21 and there will an accordion reunion happening as well); July 24, Springers Gymnastics; July 31, Hy-Noon Kiwanis; Aug. 7, Gingerbread House; Aug. 14, Witter Gallery; Aug. 21, Storm Lake High School Music Beach Party; Aug. 28, Buena Vista County Historical Society; Sept. 4, Genesis Development; Sept. 11, Buena Vista County Genealogical Society Library.
The Taste of Storm Lake will end Sept. 18 with the Retailers Fall Festival taking part in Thanks With Franks when merchants grill free hot dogs with all the trimmings.
Along with the Taste of Storm Lake, the Farmers Market will be under way at the courthouse lawn on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon June 14 through Oct. 11 and Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. July 10-Sept. 18.
