Golf: Anderson gearing up for title defenses
By Barry Poe Journal sports writer | Posted: Wednesday, June 04, 2008
J.D. Anderson will be spending the next couple of weekends in his native Northwest Iowa.
The Pocahontas native and West Des Moines resident is the three-time defending champion of the Interstate Amateur Championship, which celebrates its 72nd birthday Saturday and Sunday at Two Rivers Golf Club. Then, the following weekend, he'll defend his title in the Sioux Valley Amateur Match Play Championship at Cherokee Golf & Country Club.
"I'm real excited about coming up there and playing again," said Anderson, a former Wayne State College linkster. "With the weather the way it has been, it's been hard to get a lot of reps in, but everybody has had that problem."
Anderson beat Jeff Donaldson by three shots in last year's Interstate, then defeated Brian Schultz of Le Mars 1-up in the Sioux Valley Match Play final.
"It's never easy, but I think if I play well, I'm pretty hard to beat out there (Two Rivers)," said Anderson. "You just have to keep it in play and be patient, because the birdies will come out there."
The field of 90 players in the Interstate will also include former champions Troy Arends, Jim Anderson, Todd Sapp, Bob Brummel, Ron Van Buskirk and Dan Freed. Other noteable former tournament winners entered are Donaldson, Al Pottebaum, Nate Barbee and Schultz. Barbee, a University of Kansas golfer, won last year's River-Cade tournament at Green Valley.
The Interstate consists of 36 holes of championship medal play and an additional nine on Sunday for the top one-third of the field and ties. The tournament purse of $5,500 will pay the top one-third in gift certificates.
Participants will play in threesomes with tee times from 8 to 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The entry fee of $100 includes golf, the tournament purse and a steak dinner after Saturday's round. Entry forms are available at Two Rivers and the deadline for entry is 5 p.m. today.
Qualifying has already begun for the 74th Sioux Valley Amateur, Iowa's oldest match play tournament. Qualifying runs through Friday, June 13, with the tournament set for June 14-15. A consolation tournament for those who fail to qualify will be June 21.
Entry fee is $60 and those wishing to qualify on June 13 must tee off before noon. J.D. Anderson will have plenty of challengers, including Sioux Cityan Sapp, who won this tournament in 2005 and '06. For more information, call the Cherokee Golf & Country Club at (712) 225-4687.
The 11th Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland's Million $ Shootout will be June 9 at Whispering Creek Golf Club.
Golfers will have the opportunity to become Siouxland's next millionaire on each of the course's five par-3 holes. Those landing closest to the pin on those particular holes will advance to the final M$SO round, where a hole in one nets a cool million bucks.
In addition, prizes will be awarded for the longest drive and putt. Any hole in one on a par-3 hole nets the player $100. All five final round participants will be awarded prizes for qualifying.
Entry fee for the 4-person scramble is $75 per player or $300 per team. Check-in is at 9 a.m. for a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The final M$SO round will be 4 to 5 p.m. The entry fee includes a cart, 18 holes of golf, lunch and five chances to qualify for the final round.
The Siouxland Golf Charities Pro Am, featuring golf professionals from the Nebraska Section PGA and local amateur teams, will be Monday, July 7 at Whispering Creek. The added purse makes this one of the best events for the Nebraska PGA Section and local charities have received more than $40,000 from the tournament proceeds.
This year, Siouxland Golf Charities Inc. has teamed up with Play Golf America and the Nebraska Section PGA to bring Remsen native Dan Boever back to Siouxland for a family fun day of golf at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at Whispering Creek. In addition to Boever's show, free lessons will be provided, free of charge, by local golf professionals.
The fifth annual inter-club events will be Saturday, July 12 with teams from Dakota Dunes Country Club, Sioux City Country Club, Two Rivers Golf Club and Whispering Creek. The teams will be competing for $2,000 in prize money that will go toward junior golf programs at each course. Dakota Dunes currently holds the cup.
Siouxland Golf Charities has teamed with Great West Casualty Company to sponsor the second "gem" on the Nebraska PGA Section Pro-Am calendar, Sept. 28-29 at Two Rivers, Dakota Dunes and Sioux City Country Club. The 54-hole event teams professionals and amateurs.
Siouxland Golf Charities Inc. is a nonprofit corporation whose sole purpose is to promote quality golf events in Siouxland, with proceeds benefitting local charities and junior golf programs in the area.
