Maxfield hurls third straight no-no

GRANVILLE, Iowa -- Sergeant Bluff-Luton junior Levi Maxfield pitched his third straight no-hitter as a starter here Friday night, striking out 17 in a 3-0 baseball conquest of Granville Spalding Catholic.
"It was the most incredible pitching performance I've seen in 29 years as head coach here,'' said Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Rick Admire. "His curveball was just wicked and he struck out the first eight batters he faced.''
Maxfield, who has struck out 45 batters in 22 innings, allowing just seven total hits, began his streak of no-hitters by stopping Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto just over a week ago, striking out 13.
He then fanned eight in fashioning a four-inning no-hitter in a 15-0 win over Akron-Westfield Monday.
Maxfield improved his record to 3-1. He suffered his loss working a relief stint in a setback at the hands of Sioux City East.
Admire wasn't certain, but believed his pitchers had thrown only five no-hitters in 29 seasons before Maxfield began his streak.
