WSC's Schumacher drafted by Padres

Posted: Saturday, June 07, 2008
WAYNE, Neb. -- Former Wayne State College pitcher Nick Schumacher was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 28th round Friday afternoon on the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Schumacher, a 6-4, 210-pound righthander from Nebraska City, Neb., was the 855th overall pick of the 50-round draft. It marks the second straight season a Wildcat pitcher was drafted, joining former lefthander, Travis Mortimore, who was taken last year in the 21st round by the Seattle Mariners.

Schumacher had a 13-2 record and a 2.36 ERA in his final season at Wayne State. He won first-team ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors and was also the pitcher of the year from the NCAA Division II Central Region and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Schumacher was tied with five other pitchers for the most wins by a Division II pitcher this season. He set a new single-season record for wins at Wayne State, breaking the old mark of 11 set by Nate Miller in 2004.

Schumacher, who struck out 96 batters in 91.2 innings as a senior, closed out his WSC career with a 30-9 record matching the mark held by Brady Borner (1998-2001).
