Relay For Life planned at Storm Lake

STORM LAKE, Iowa -- The 2008 Relay for Life, the Buena Vista County American Cancer Society's 11th annual event for cancer awareness, is scheduled June 21 and 22 at the Storm Lake High School football field and track.
This year's theme is "Pack the Track."
"The evening events get under way with opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. and the Luminary Ceremony at dusk. The closing ceremony will be at 6 a.m. June 22," said Kelly Wollesen, co-chair for the event.
This is the third year Wollesen has served as co-chair with her sister, Kathy Goodman, although both have been involved in Relay for Life in various capacities for the history of the event in Buena Vista County.
In 2007, 22 teams raised around $40,000. Twenty-five have signed up for the 2008 relay so far. The teams have received financial pledges to participate and some have done fundraisers on their own including bake sales.
A quilt created and donated by Rosanna Morrow will be raffled off. Chances for the quilt are $2 for one and $5 for three. The quilt is on display at Trimark Buena Vista Clinic and tickets can be purchased there.
The Luminary Ceremony recognizes those touched by cancer. Individuals or businesses make contributions in memory of those who have lost their fight with cancer and in honor of those who have survived.
"This year we have reduced the price for a luminary from $10 to $5 so we want to 'pack the track,'" Wollesen added.
After the opening ceremonies, there will be a dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. for a freewill donation. The Survivors' Lap will be at 7 p.m. and the team lap at 7:30 p.m.
Entertainment will include Josh Nielsen on acoustic guitar from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., accordion music at 7:30 p.m. by Norm Hogrefe and the St. Mary's Drill Team will perform at 8 p.m. Archie MacKay may be doing some Scottish bagpiping and Starz Entertainment will have karaoke from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will resume after the Luminary Ceremony at dusk.
On-site activities include the Storm Lake Music Boosters concession stand, and the Storm Lake Kiwanis Club will be serving popcorn, plus there will be face painting by Jose Hernandez, children's activities and games on the green including tug of war, volleyball, dodgeball and a limbo dance contest.
