Mental health conference to feature national speaker

SIOUX CITY -- Siouxland Mental Health Center and Woodbury County will sponsor "The Many Faces of Mental Illness and Intellectual Disabilities'' conference Thursday at the Sioux City Convention Center.
The keynote speaker will be Kay Redfield Jamison, an author, professor of psychiatry and mental health advocate who has struggled with her own mental illness of bi-polar disorder, which she outlines in her book, "An Unquiet Mind.''
Jamison has been featured on such TV shows as Oprah and Larry King Live, and has consulted on various occasions with CNN, most recently in the wake of the shootings at Virginia Tech University.
Additional conference speakers include:
--Robert Mitchell, a certified social worker with 42 years of experience who is a popular seminar leader and convention speaker.
--Henry S. Roane, director of Severe Behavior Disorders Program Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at the Munroe-Meyer Institute. He is also the associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
--Jane Sanders, a certified addiction counselor and prevention specialist in Iowa who has 30 years of experience in recovery, therapy and prevention. She is currently a prevention specialist at Jackson Recovery Centers in Sioux City, working with families, youth and the community.
--Serena Garvin, assistant manager of Friendship House, a social club for individuals with mental illness.
Continuing education credits will be awarded for nurses, social workers, nursing home administrators and other professionals. CMEs will be awarded to physicians and physican assistants through Mercy Medican Center.
