Nebraska working to remove bald eagle from endangered list

Posted: Monday, June 16, 2008
LINCOLN (AP) -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has been working to remove the American bald eagle from the state's list of threatened and endangered species.

Such a de-listing would follow the revered bird's removal from the federal endangered list in June 2007.

The state commission says the number of bald eagles is on the rise in Nebraska. The number of documented nests has grown from 45 in 2006 to 51 in 2007, with 80 expected by year's end.

The commission will hold a series of public meetings in July and August on the proposed de-listing.

If the bald eagle is removed from Nebraska's endangered list, it will continue to be protected by state and federal laws that prohibit people from harming the birds.
