Rounds says opponents' lawsuits won't delay refinery

DAKOTA DUNES -- South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds said today that opponents aimed at slowing the building of an oil refinery in Union County will be disappointed.

Lawsuits filed by opposition groups will face a swift judicial process in the state. He said the state's court system is well-funded and civil cases move through them quickly, in 30 to 40 days, not the months or years it may take in other states.

He again stood by his pledge not to allow Hyperion Resources to cut any corners in the environmental permitting process for the oil refinery/energy center it proposes to build in Union County.

Rounds made the remarks to reporters before teeing off at Dakota Dunes Country Club, where he is entertaining business prospects for the state and Siouxland in the eighth annual Governor's Golf Classic. Rounds said he will play the par-3 14th hole all day so he can see the guests in all 30 groups.

Rounds discussed the state's pursuit of energy, not only the oil refinery but also ethanol, biodiesel and two new electric power plants that will be coming online.

"The places that are afraid to produce energy are going to lose," the governor said.

He said 180 people were registered for the event and 120 would play golf. Along with the governor, business leaders who have found success in Siouxland are co-sponsoring the daylong event showcasing the area's opportunities.

Although the guest list is kept confidential, Hyperion Resources CEO Albert Huddleston was a guest at the event two years ago and apparently liked what he saw in southern Union County. The area is the top site under consideration for the refinery, but the company has said it is still pursuing other places in the Midwest as well.

Union County voters on June 3 approved a zoning change for the proposed refinery.

" AnnieO- I do live in Union county. Why did you avoid the questions I asked? A good opportunity for you to demonstrate your ability to distinguish between fact and opinion. What excuses have I made? You talk about generations of people owning land, but made no defense about how they acquired the land from the indians. You make excuses. You post no facts, only lies. Can you post even single lie from Hyperion? Why do avoid defending your positions?
By the way "over there" is correct. Their is ownership; there is place. You are a fraud, nothing more. "

" Jeff-Still struggling with language skills I see. Over there, Jeff? Are you not a resident of Union County? You betcha I know the difference. I deal with facts I can independently verify. You deal in what Jeff, excuses?
Fed Up-the concern is on failure to finance the refinery, the ordinance still stands, and Hyperion can still exercise their options and sell the land to equally undesireable entities.
Hyperion supporter-fish occasionally jump out of the boat. Oh and that morning smell you're experiencing, try chewing on a mint leaf, it'll clear that condition right up. "

" I agree....it ain't gonna happen folks....the refinery that is. Too many family problems and lawsuits within the Hunt/Huddleston family. Their money is all tied up and if I were an investor I would stay clear of this whole sham of a company. "

" Hyperion is not coming here because Rounds bought Union county. Union county welcome Hyperion with open arms. June 3 was Union county independence day. Union county became free from the lies and nonsensical diatribes of the opposition. We took the bull by the horns and chose our own destiny. Any oppositional person that does not like this choose should not have bought land in a democratic society. Welcome to America. "

" AnnieO-you keep talking about the losses of generational landowners. How long has the land you own over there been in your family? Can you name even one person who is being forced off of there land? Do you know the difference between fact and opinion? "
