Home runs help Sheldon win Hinton tournament

HINTON, Iowa -- Sheldon got home runs from five different players while winning each of its games Saturday at the Hinton Invitational.
The Orabs opened with a 15-1 win in five innings over Akron-Westfield, getting a three-run home run from Taylor Zeutenhorst and a solo shot from Adam Nilles.
Sheldon claimed the title with a 14-2 win in seven frames over Hinton, which hosted a home baseball tournament for the first time in the program's history. The Orabs, now 13-8 for the season, got solo home runs from Nick Pulscher, Cole Kleinwolterink and Tony Rodgers.
Hinton (8-10) opened with an 11-8 win over Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto, getting three hits each from Nick Freed and Adam Struve. MVAO (16-11) fell 7-6 to Akron-Westfield in the consolation game, but took a 6-4 lead on the top of the seventh inning on a two-run home run from Wes Burkhart. However, Akron-Westfield (3-12) rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-clearing double from Justin Koch.
Alta Tournament
ALTA, Iowa -- Alta's baseball team rallied from a 12-1 deficit to beat Galva-Holstein 14-12 in the title game of Saturday's Alta Invitational.
Galva-Holstein, a 9-8 first-round winner over River Valley, took advantage of six walks and eight errors by Alta, which advanced to the finals with a 6-4 win over Clay Central-Everly.
The Pirates scored seven runs in the second inning, a frame highlighted by Mark Cronin's two run home run. G-H increased its lead to 12-1 with five runs in the third, but Alta rallied to score three runs in the third inning, added two in the fourth, then tallied eight runs in the fifth, triggered by four consecutive run-producing hits, starting with a two-run single by Ben Stevens. Jack Mills and Austin Stille followed with RBI singles while Scott Radke hit a three-run home run.
Stevens was 3-for-4 in the title game, scored three runs and drove in two for Alta (20-3). Stille and Andrew Allerdings were each 2-for-3. Schuyler Radke pitched three and one-third innings of relief to get credit for the win.
Clay Central-Everly blanked River Valley 13-0 in a four-inning consolation game.
Cherokee 6, Harlan 3
CARROLL, Iowa -- Top-ranked (Class 2A) Cherokee snapped a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 6-3 win over sixth-ranked (Class 3A) Harlan Saturday in first-round action at the Carroll Kuemper Tournament.
Cody Ege notched his third hit of the game, a two-run double, in the sixth. Winning pitcher Matt Koch, who allowed four hits and struck out 14, contributed an RBI single in the sixth.
Mark Brown and Tyler Jones each recorded one double for Cherokee (17-1), which faced Carroll at 8 p.m. Saturday.
In other first-round games Saturday at the tournament, Jefferson-Scranton edged Carroll Kuemper 8-6, Council Bluffs St. Albert beat Le Mars 11-1 in six innings while Carroll whipped Spencer 11-1 in six innings.
Denison-Schleswig 9-9, Clarinda 2-8
DENISON, Iowa -- Cody VanNess had a combined five hits and three RBIs while leading Denison-Schleswig to a 9-2, 9-8 Hawkeye 10 Conference doubleheader sweep over Clarinda Friday night.
VanNess was the Monarchs' lone multiple hitter in the opener. Colin Straight hit a solo home run in the first inning while Kerry Fineran highlighted a four-run fourth inning with a two-run double. Winning pitcher Nathan Bruck (4-1) allowed three hits and struck out two in four innings.
In the nightcap, Corey Stapleton tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI double, then scored the winning run on Straight's RBI single. Stapleton was 3-for-5 with two doubles while VanNess' solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning sent the game into extra innings, tied 7-7. Kirk Salmon was 2-for-4 with a double. VanNess (4-0) picked up the win in relief for the Monarchs, now 16-3 and 8-1 in the Hawkeye 10.
Le Mars 19, Spirit Lake 9
LE MARS, Iowa -- Aaron Fischer was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs as Le Mars whipped Spirit Lake 19-9 in a five-inning Lakes Conference game Friday night.
Taylor Oetken was 2-for-2 with one home run and five RBIs for Le Mars (11-7, 6-3 Lakes). Adam Hasselquist was 2-for-2 with a home run and four runs scored. Chris Bergquist hit his team-leading fourth home run.
Nick Erickson homered, singled and drove in two runs for Spirit Lake. Ryan Jennings was 2-for-3.
