North’s Stokes makes soccer elite

Chelsie Stokes has been known to come late for practice.
North girls soccer coach Aaron Kolbo calls it a chronic habit. However, when Stokes arrives, she's all business.
Stokes, a junior sweeper, is never late when it comes to playing defense. The leader of a group that allowed just two goals prior to a 3-1 first-round loss to Johnston at the Class 2A state tournament, Stokes won Elite All-State honors for the second straight season on the squad based on ballots sent in from varsity coaches and released today by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
"When Chelsie's on the field, she gives 110 percent," said Kolbo, whose squad won the Missouri River Activities Conference and finished the season with a 12-1 record.
"She's the hardest-working girl on the field. She leads by example. She has the mentality that she's not going to get beat to the ball and if she does, she'll put pressure on the offensive player who has the ball."
Stokes, also a first-team Class 2A all-stater, is one of four Northwest Iowans who made either the first or second teams in the state's two classes.
Bishop Heelan, a Class 1A state tournament participant, was represented on the first team by senior midfielder Bridgette Niles while teammate Carli Tritz, a sophomore forward, made the second team.
Denison-Schleswig, which fell 6-1 to Heelan in the regional finals, placed junior defender Brooke Wehle on the Class 1A second team.
Kolbo likes the way Stokes (who wasn't available for comment) directs traffic on defense. Senior Brittney Schindler, an honorable mention All-Stater who missed post-season play because of an ACL tear, was another key defensive player in a group that also included senior Emily Kaplan along with sophomores Haley Dickman, Cameron Oakley and Rhiannon Hainds.
"Chelsie's vocal," said Kolbo. "She's not barking orders, she just tells them where they need to be. They listen and it's good.
"Being a sweeper, she's the last one to help on defense before the goalkeeper can touch the ball. Chelsie does such a good job, our goalkeeper (Taylor Culver) doesn't have to touch the ball. That's why we had such a long streak of nobody scoring on us."
Culver, a junior, posted 10 shutouts and has had 26 in the last three seasons.
Niles had 10 goals and 11 assists for Heelan (13-4), which fell 3-2 to Pella in the first round of the 1A state tournament. Tritz had 15 goals and three assists.
Wehle recorded seven goals and two assists for Denison-Schleswig (12-7), which lost five games against Class 2A opponents. Teammate Jill Martin, a senior midfielder, was a 1A honorable mention selection along with Heelan sophomore defender Tiffany Hicklin.
Freshman forward Ashlie Stokes, North's leader with 13 goals, was a Class 2A honorable mention selection along with three of her teammates, senior forward Kelsey Reitmeier, senior midfielder Sierra Hsieh and Schindler.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton, which fell 2-0 to North in the regional final, had three 2A honorable mention selections, junior forwards Kenzie Small (19 goals, 5 assists) and Erin Reinders (13 goals, 6 assists) along with senior goalkeeper Katie Speed.
Senior goalkeeper Brittney Mathison of West and junior defender Jaclyn Clark of East were honorable mention picks.
